US-Bangla suspending Jashore flights from July 16

Dhaka: US-Bangla Airlines
will suspend all flights on the Dhaka–Jashore route from July 16, citing
declining passenger demand and continued financial losses, raising concerns over
the potential impact on business activities and employment linked to Jashore
Airport.
According to airport
officials, the route has experienced a sharp decline in traffic since the
opening of the Padma Bridge, which significantly reduced travel time between
Dhaka and the country's southwestern region by road. As more travelers have
shifted to buses and private vehicles, demand for domestic air travel on the
route has dropped substantially.
Jashore Airport, once
among Bangladesh's busiest regional airports, handled as many as 18 daily
flights before the bridge became operational, serving more than 2,000
passengers each day. Currently, only nine flights operate throughout the week.
US-Bangla has been operating one daily service, while Biman Bangladesh Airlines
now flies the route only twice a week.
Local travel industry
representatives said, passenger numbers have fallen to around 70 to 80
travelers per day. They also point to relatively high airfares as another
factor discouraging passengers, despite the short distance between Dhaka and Jashore.
The suspension is
expected to affect businesses that depend on airport operations, including
travel agencies, transport providers, hotels, and small enterprises in the
surrounding area.
Business leaders in Jashore
argued that the region's economic importance, supported by the Benapole Land
Port and the Nawapara River Port, justifies maintaining stronger air
connectivity. They warn that reduced flight services could negatively affect
trade and investment in southwestern Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the district
administration said it would hold discussions with relevant stakeholders to
explore possible solutions. Authorities are also considering launching cargo
flights from Jashore Airport to facilitate exports of flowers and vegetables, a
move they believe could help revive airport activity and support the regional
economy.
