Dhaka : Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Atiur Rahman has taken multifarious innovative initiatives to make the country's banking sector modern, digitalised, inclusive and more humane, officials said recently.
They said the financial inclusion campaign of the central bank bolstering inclusive growth model of the government has been very successful in recent years in offering basic financial services to broader mass of population, particularly the disadvantaged, un-served and under-served with the aid of rapidly expanding information and communications technology (ICT).
As part of the financial inclusion campaign, the central bank chief has made as many as 80 grassroots level meetings during weekends and national holidays where he exchanged views with the rural poor farmers, disadvantaged people, local community leaders, journalists, bankers, businessmen and stakeholders to identify and facilitate their financing needs, they added.
"We are designing and implementing innovative models with great enthusiasm of the banking sector players in creating and promoting domestic demand through enhancing purchasing power of the general people and these initiatives have been helping a lot in facing the ongoing global financial challenges," the BB governor said while explaining the main objective of his latest initiatives.
He also said strong domestic demand helped Bangladesh economy weather the global financial crisis well.
Dr Rahman took the helm as the 10th governor of the country's central bank in May 2009. After his assumption of this crucial regulator's position, he has implemented many innovative special programmes in addition to the regular mandatory programmes of the central bank aiming at broadening the net of basic financial services.
He has been highly appreciated for his active role in opening of millions of new bank accounts for farmers and disadvantaged poor with initial nominal deposits of only Taka 10 (approximately US$0.12).
"This central bank initiative has been able to open bank accounts for more than 13.0 million farmers and disadvantaged poor which is indeed a net financial inclusion," the BB Governor noted.
Dr Rahman, an economist, has always been working for promotion of inclusive and indigenous development in Bangladesh. He has spent most of his life in research on the livelihood and welfare of the excluded people living in environmentally challenging areas, including 'chars' (shoals).
The BB Governor himself conducted numerous on-site inspections and visited many farms and renewable energy plants and projects by walking in remote areas during his extensive tour around the countryside, added the central bank officials.
He also focused on strong anti-inflationary monetary policy which has helped maintain stable value of Bangladesh Taka both internally and externally.
"Perhaps, no other central bank Governor in the world has carried out such inclusive and pro-poor programmes, mostly during the weekends and national holidays," a senior official of the central bank said.
He also said realising the financing needs of the people in rural and remote areas was not an easy job.
In recognition of his significant contribution in the field of banking and finance, and human progress, Dr Rahman has received various prestigious awards, including the Indira Gandhi Gold Plaque 2012 and WHO's World No-Tobacco Day Award 2012.
