_A Monitor Report
New Delhi : The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Air India (AI) may be acting tough on the pilots on strike. Howe-ver, more than 500 pilots off work is costing the airline not just its revenue but also loyal passengers. The impact on revenue is more as the flights grounded due to the pilots' stir are long-haul international flights. As per estimates given by the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG), the currently derecognised AI pilots' union, the 49 days of strike has caused a revenue loss of more than RS500 crore to the national carrier.
According to airline officials, AI has been able to sell only 1,000 seats per day instead of the usual 4,000. This is due to the long drawn stalemate between the AI pilots ans the management's unwillingness to call for a dialogue. As the pilots now go on hunger strike, the stalemate is likely stretch longer.
