  Country needs seven times more travel professionals

Dhaka : Travel agencies, hotels and airlines require five to seven times the number of professionals now existing in the country.
This was stated by MA Muhai-min Saleh, Pre-sident, Associa-tion of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB) while addressing the Certificate Awa-rding Cere-mony of ATAB Tourism Trai-ning Institute (ATTI) courses held at the Dilkusha Hall of Hotel Purbani Inter-national on June 2.
Presenting a detailed scenario, ATAB President said, travel agencies of the country need 100,000 staff, but they have only 20,000 at present.
Similar is the picture in hospitality sector. Hotels, resorts and guest houses need 150,000 staff while they now have only 20,000.
Some 50,000 tour operators and guides are needed in place of 10,000 at present.
Aviation sector presents a poorer picture: Some 50,000 staffs are needed for airlines while there now exist only 5,000 personnel.
Five universities offer three-year courses while NHTTI of BPC, Biman's institute and ATAB Tourism Training Institute offer three to six months courses, he said.
Saleh suggested setting up of more training institutes at division level and instructing National University to open departments to offer tourism, hospitality and aviation studies.
M Faruk Khan, Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, gave away the certificates among the successful participants of 14 Diploma, 13 Certificate and one Ground Handling courses since its inception in
2007. The ceremony was add-ressed by Md Hemayet Uddin Talukder, Chairman, Bangla-desh Parjatan Corporation, Ak-htaruzzaman Khan Kabir, CEO, Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) and AKM Bari, Con-vener, Standing Committee, ATTI.
The minister also formally launched software developed by ATAB by moving the touchpad of a laptop.
