Dhaka : Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has started renovating the runway of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after long 17 years, although runway is supposed to be repaired every ten years.
M Faruk Khan, Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism formally inaugurated the repair work of the runway on June 3. Top officials of the ministry and CAAB were present at the programme.
The 10,500-foot runway is being repaired under a project titled ?Overlay of the Runway of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with Asphalt Concrete? at a cost of Tk 187 crore.
The renovation is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2013, sources said.
Abdul Monem Ltd has been awarded work order on March 5 to renovate the runway.
The Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultancy of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is working as an advisory group for the project.
It will provide necessary support, including design, documentation and supervision, sources added.
Faruk Khan said, ?It is necessary to maintain the international standard of our runway to ensure international air connectivity as well as the country?s reputation.?
?We will also renovate the runways of other airports to strengthen local connectivity,? he added.
Air Vice Marshal Mahmud Hussain said CAAB had repaired the runway in 1995-96 fiscal year. The renovation became essential in 2005.
?We are working hard to build an international standard runway for the airport, which now handles many modern aircraft that are heavyweight and wide-bodied.?
?The sustainability of the runway had already expired and some cracks have developed on the runway. We kept the runway usable through temporary repair work,? he added.
Sudhendu Bikash Goswami, Chief Engineer of CAAB, said, ?We will complete the surface repair work by Octo-ber 30 and will go for asphalt concrete overlay over the runway from November 1 this year.?
The work is slated to be finished by April 30, 2013, he said.
?We will overlay the runway with asphalt concrete at night and domestic and international flight operations will remain suspended from 10:00pm to 6:00am daily between November 1 and April 30.?
About 150 engineers will be engaged at the airport during the major overhaul of the runway, Goswami said.
Abdul Monem, Chairman and Managing Director of Abdul Monem Group of Companies, and Azad Zahirul Islam, Director, CAAB, also spoke.
At present, around 31 local and foreign airlines operate to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where 190 aircraft land and take off a day on an average.
